Scientific illustration

The master Scientific Illustration is a unique study programme in the Netherlands, and also one of a kind on the European continent. Naturally, the programme is highly international and attracts many students from abroad. Graduates are specialists in visualizing different issues from biological, biomedical and clinical spheres.

During the programme, emphasis is put on both, classical and more innovative techniques of illustration, like (digital) photography and computer-based solutions. The combination of different means allows students to precisely depict structures, also dealing with the challenge to display 3D structures in 2D.

The dissection of humans and animals, the handling of “imaging” techniques such as CT and MRI is an important aspect in our programme. We have also integrated an introduction in Reconstruction of Soft Facial parts, or facial reconstruction for forensic or archaeological purposes. Since the programme takes place in close cooperation with Maastricht University, the PBL (problem based learning) system is applied, in which issues are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. It stimulates self-study, while students monitor their own study progress. The programme is offered as a full-time study (2 years, 120 ects) or part-time (4 Years, 120 ects) and has been accredited by the NVAO in 2008.
